Tony Whitehead's visit.
Birdwatching in Cairns
In July 2008 we made a trip to the Cairns region in Queensland.  I first visited this area in the early 90's for the purpose of scuba-diving on the Great Barrier Reef and remember being more impressed by the rainforest and birds than the reef (this takes nothing from the reef which is stunning but I had been expecting that--the rainforest was a revelation).  The main purpose this trip was a family holiday centred around the Great Barrier Reef and the Daintree Rainforest.  This combined with birdwatching and bird photography well as it is a fantastic area for birds>>>

Like a hang glider launching off a steep cliff, a Great-billed Heron takes to the skies with it's impressive two metre wingspan.

Another favourite with visiting photographers is the Papuan Frogmouth at left blending in with it's background.

The kingfisher shown here on the right is called the Little Kingfisher for good reason, it is not only Australia's smallest  but it is the second smallest in the world.

Saltwater Crocodiles are the best known wildlife species in Daintree, below, and also make good photographic subjects.

Whilst on a family holiday, Tony Whitehead came out at dawn and took lots of wildlife photos for his website:

Compare the tail of the frogmouth above with Tony's frogmouth at the left. This photo was taken by Brian Harrison from the UK on 29 September this year. The Papuan Frogmouth seems to have an extra long tail and this is often it's give away.
